It is the mission of the Iota Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated to be the 5-Star model chapter comprised of professional women who are innovative leaders, trendsetters and role models; united to establish and implement first-class community programs for the betterment of society.
The Iota Zeta Chapter has a rich history of service and support in the Indianapolis community. In the spring of 1930, the late Mistresses Flora Bates, Ruth Bailey and Carolyn Cain with the assistance of Mr. Elder W. Diggs, principal of School 42, met in an effort to organize a chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. This group of women, along with Mr. Diggs, made contact with Eliza Baker (president of Teacher’s College and superintendent of Indianapolis Kindergarten) to assist in their efforts. These determined and courageous women succeeded in their effort on June 30, 1931 when the Iota Zeta Chapter was chartered in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Ruth Bailey, Carolyn Cain, Cleo Brock, Marie Booth Hill, Edna Osborne and Adalaide Riley chartered the Iota Zeta Chapter on June 30, 1931 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our chapter has supported the Indianapolis community through a variety of service programs.
Annually, the chapter participates in the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration, the Circle City Classic Parade and the March for Babies sponsored by the March of Dimes.
